Launcing of Kiyaya Community Garden Incubator Project

Poverty and lack of employment in the community make it difficult for many families to make ends meet.  However, community gardens have become a model for small-scale sustainable agriculture in many, and have shown many benefits including job creation and food security.

Convinced, the Tuungane Foundation initiated the Community Garden Incubator project to give women and youth the skills and tools to invest in agricultural entrepreneurship.

This project aims to support the establishment of 3 community fields in favour of 3 groups of vulnerable women in the Kasenga Communities and aims among others:

  • Job creation. The investments made in the 3 community fields to be created will mobilise local communities and create jobs for 15 women. The 3 groups of women will be encouraged to work on 50mx50m demarcated areas to grow their own produce (onions, tomatoes, cabbage, amaranths, cucumbers,….).
  • Training for farmers. These gardens will be spaces for community exchange and knowledge sharing. The women’s groups will offer formal training to other women in the community, where other community members will learn about agricultural production, pest control, business management and rural entrepreneurship.
  • Food security, nutrition and health: These gardens will provide local communities with access to a diverse and affordable diet. Almost all the food is organic, as are the compost and pesticides.
